Suicide, Depression, & Robin Williams: Better Words than Mine
Yesterday I wrote a quick post about Robin Williams. At the end of the post, I briefly touched on depression and suicide. But honestly, I know very little about it.
So today I'm sharing some of the best things I read in response to Robin Williams's suicide. These posts are by people who actually suffer from depression. From people who have attempted suicide. From people whose loved ones have committed suicide. From people who have more insight and wisdom than I do.
Robin Williams and Why Funny People Kill Themselves "You ever have that funny friend, the class-clown type, who one day just stopped being funny around you? Did it make you think they were depressed? Because it's far more likely that, in reality, that was the first time they were comfortable enough around you to drop the act. The ones who kill themselves, well, they're funny right up to the end."
The Depressed Christian: Why the Dark Night is No Measure of Your Soul "And then like a troll from the old children's stories, Depression would be on the scene to gobble my joy right up. The beautiful glimpses of joy were precious grace to me, but no matter how tightly I wrapped my fingers around that joy, I couldn't find a way to make that joy fix my broken thoughts."
In Which Depression is NOT Your Fault "Since the tragic death of Robin Williams, I have seen some terrible, misinformed, and abusive bullsh*t online about depression and mental illness."
Depression, Robin, and You "Here is what I learned about depression during my year-and-a-half-long battle: It is not a place for self-help."
I promise things will be more upbeat on the blog soon. It's been a heavy week all around. So much sadness and tragedy this week. Perhaps we need a little reminder about what we stay alive for. Poetry, beauty, romance, love. And in my opinion, laughter.
Wishing you a little more laughter the rest of this week, friends.
