When I Grow Up...
Hey y'all! I'm excited to announce a new blog series called When I Grow Up... This series is going to explore all kinds of careers, from meteorologists to figure skaters and everything in between! It will appear on Wednesdays and I cannot wait to kick it off next week. (And yes, that is a picture of me from my high school graduation!)
Before we get started though, I want to explain why I'm doing this series. I attended my 10 year reunion recently which is always an excuse for a trip down memory lane. I looked through my yearbooks and journals from high school, and I was reminded of the dreams I had back then. When I was a little kid I wanted to be a doctor when I grew up. Not just a doctor, though. I also wanted to be a writer! My dream was to be a pediatrician who wrote novels on the side (because doctors have so much free time, right?). I suppose I'm halfway to my dream; I am a writer. But Chem 1 in college made me realize that I would never become a doctor. So I became an accountant instead. Let's face it, not many kids say "accountant" when they are asked what they want to be when they grow up! (Ok, some do. But I was not one of them.)
Yet here I am, an accountant who also writes. Oh, there have been other careers I've considered. I've thought about law school or grad school for an MFA. I even considered the FBI for a brief time! For right now though, I'm happy where I'm at.
However, thinking about all those dreams I had about what I would do when I grew up made me look around and see where my classmates and friends were at with their dreams. Because believe it or not, there are some people out there doing exactly what they always wanted to do! Of course, there also people doing things they never dreamed of and loving every moment.
So over the next few weeks (maybe months) I'm going to be talking to people in both categories, as well as some who may fall somewhere in the middle. I'm excited to learn about all the careers out there, and how people ended up where they are. Of course, I'm not planning a big career change. But maybe you are and you would love to hear from a speech pathologist or a fashion stylist. Stay tuned, those are both careers I'm going to cover!
The series starts next Wednesday with an interview with a local meteorologist here in OKC, and he has some great things to share. So come back next week to really kick off the new series!
