Recently I bought some little plant babies.

This isn't the first time I've tried to have houseplants. I've killed several different varieties in the past, including aloe and jade! (I overwatered the aloe and it exploded. I'm still not sure what happened to the jade.) But as I looked through the Nesting Place and various other home décor websites and magazines, I noticed they all had something in common that my home did not: green.

Yes, they all had houseplants EVERYWHERE. And my home had zero, unless you count the fake set-up I picked up at a local yard sale recently.

My cat has yet to figure out it is fake. She keeps trying to eat the grass coming out of it!

I don't know why I'm so bad at houseplants. We always had them everywhere when I was a kid; my parent's dining room is full of them! So maybe I can find a way to turn my black thumb green. It can't hurt to try, right?

Here's what I decided to start with. And yes, I named each plant.

Marshal is a Dracaena and Lily is Ivy. Obviously these two belonged in one window together.

Robin is the Nephthytis (This one is actually poisonous to cats and dogs, so she sits on the fireplace mantle!)

Ted is a Philodendron, he hangs out in the bedroom. (Though perhaps that should've been Barney's place!)

Barney is a fern.

I bought each of these little guys at Wal-Mart, along with potting soil and small planters for each of them. It was maybe $20 for everything. I didn't want to spend too much on this little experiment in case I fail and kill them all.

I took each one out of its plastic container and planted it in the planters with fresh potting soil. Taking the directions to heart, I watered each one and put it in places according to the light needs. Two are low light, three are medium.
